Folks,
I wrote an article that describes a comparison I did between
Coyote Graphics output and Function Graphics output. I provide
a script you can use to produce your own files, and I also
allow you to download some of the files from the web page,
if you would like to examine the results yourself.
There are still a few open questions in my mind, but the
bottom line is that both graphics systems appear to produce
comparable results. Although Coyote Graphics output is
generally smaller in file size and larger in pixel size,
for reasons I don't understand.
I would say that the major difference between the two
systems is that Function Graphics creates HUGE files by
default, whereas Coyote Graphics creates files that
are about the size of normal IDL graphics windows by
default.
But, see what you think:

Take some care when you open the PDF files. On my browser
(Firefox) the Coyote Graphics PDF files appear to have
a "native" zoom of 75% and the Function Graphics PDF files
appear to have a "native" zoom of 125%. Make sure you have
them at the same zoom factor when comparing them.
Cheers,
David
