Folks,

I am looking for someone who might find it fun, entertaining,
interesting, or simply a learning experience to take over
the care and feeding of Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming.

I'm retiring. No, really, this time I'm really retiring. :-)

I've been thinking about this for some time now. I've grown
pretty cynical and this job is not as much fun as it used
to be for me. I'm going to turn my creative energy in
other directions. I hope to write more e-books, do more
travel, spend more time in the mountains.

Having death touch the family this week is one reason.
Publishing my first "real" book, even if no one wants
to read it, is another. (Available on Amazon and other
outlets momentarily.) I've taken on a larger role in
the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers, patrolling the wilderness
trails near where I live. And I have been talking to
a local science group about a larger role in a new tool
development effort they are just getting started. This
was a big IDL shop that has decided to do all their new
tool development in Python. Since I'm pretty much headed
that way myself, it seems like a no-brainer.

I leave with a few regrets. I burned too many bridges
in my day. I wish I hadn't done that. I wish, once in a while,
that I had been issued a diplomatic gene. But, this has been
one hell of a lot of fun, too, and that's the part I am going
to remember the rest of my life. This community, and this
newsgroup in particular, was the best ever. I'm pretty sure
it will never be surpassed. I've made many friends here and
I will miss all of you, for sure.

I'll hang around for awhile, answering questions about
Coyote Graphics if no one else can. But, I don't think I'll
be writing IDL articles for my web page anymore, and I won't
be paying attention to this newsgroup each and every minute
of each and every day anymore either. :-)

My best wishes to all of you. It's been a grand time, and
Coyote and I will be hoisting a couple of cold ones soon
in your honor.

Cheers,

David
