Hi all,
I had this problem lately and it took a couple of days to be solved. Hopefully it will help someone.

I played a little with my repository, suddenly IDLde crashed and after that I cannot start it again, obtaining only the initial splash screen freezed with the load bar at 100%.

The instance of IDL 8.0.1 and ENVI 4.8 run with normal problem (both unstable).

After reinstalling 8.1 a couple of time and started digging in the configuration file I noticed in the
/Users/mario/.idl/itt/idlworkbench-config-idl8.1.0/eclipse.i ni.ignored file.

Changing it to eclipse.ini worked like a charm, Eclipse and SVN working fine.

Final point:
A search for "eclipse.ini.ignored" results in any useful explanation of the problem.
/Applications/itt/idl/idl80/idlde/idlde.darwin.x86_64.app/Co ntents/Info.plist states:

<!-- WARNING:
If you try to add a single VM argument (-vmargs) here,
*all* vmargs specified in eclipse.ini will be ignored.
We recommend to add all arguments in eclipse.ini
-->

Could it be that the SVN plugin tried to change some option in the Eclipse invocation, resulting in renaming the eclipse.ini file?

Notes:
I'm running:
- Mac OsX 10.7.3
- idl_lmgrd v11.6 (unsupported by Exelis on this platform, personal communication)
- IDL 8.1
- SVNKit 1.3.0

Cheers,
Mario.
