IDL 8.2 is now available for download from the Exelis VIS website at
www.exelisvis.com

This release continues with improvements to the new graphics
introduced in IDL 8, which make it easier and quicker to create
visualizations. IDL 8.2 also adds other new functionality including
checkboxes for the tree widget, Where method for LIST and HASH,
support for JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), checks for duplicate
routine names, and file IO updates/new support.

See details of what’s new in IDL 8.2 at:
http://www.exelisvis.com/language/en-US/ProductsServices/IDL /VersionUpdate.aspx

Someone has to download the distribution from them (I download all
platforms). But then you can either provide your application in
platform-specific downloads or build a multi-platform VM.

Yes, that ends up being the way. But then, if one wants to use make_rt
to build for another platform, it will be necessary to download the
files for that platform.

Hi Paulo,

I checked with tech support -- you should be good to download 8.2. Please let me know if the download fails.

Use MAKE_RT and bundle the VM with your application. Take Exelis VIS and
their website out of the equation.

I got an email shortly afterwards saying that it was now OK to download.
After that, it downloaded as expected.

It seems to be. For the past few months it has been extremely
disappointing, since my laptop has an old ATI card, which no longer
has drivers that work on a recent OS, forcing the use of software
rendering. That is one of the reasons I have been absent here.

I can understand the reasons why they changed this, but for someone who
has to write scripts to find the default installation locations, the
logic is getting more and more complicated.

More of my thoughts on the new release here:

And even when you can download it, they make life interesting by once again changing the default install directory on the Mac. It would be great if they could settle on one folder name and stick with it.

The only answer I get from tech support is the usual useless one:

"Thank you for your recent email question. We have forwarded your
inquiry on to your local product distributor. All IDL and ENVI
technical support for our users in Brazil is provided by our
distributor, Sulsoft. Please refer all future queries to them. Thank
you. You can reach them via telephone, fax, or email at the following
address."

The problem has nothing to do with Sulsoft. It is in my Exelis
account. All the Sulsoft site (http://www.sulsoft.com.br/index.php/
downloads/) has on IDL download is a link to Exelis. On top of that,
besides the "forwarded inquiry" and my email to Sulsoft asking for a
new license file, they have not answered me so far.

All these frequent obstacles to download IDL do not even make any
sense. It is not even just the inconvenience of having to register. It
is also that the account must be reviewed and approved (and often one
has to wait for reapproval). How can someone say that we can make
software for other people to use without a license, if the VM is
impossible to download? I have stopped saying that "anyone can run
code on the VM", since only by random luck or a lot of patience one
will be able to download the VM.

In this case the problem is not in IDL. ATI is to blame, as they only
keep making drivers for very recent models, and do not release the
source code or documentation necessary for the open source driver to
do everything. Even for the recent models, their linux drivers are
full of problems. I spent years having to patch every new driver ATI
released, as they kept ignoring the fix I had posted (even when it was
in very trivial places, like the installer).

Which is one of the two reasons I decided to only use Nvidia now. I
never had those issues with the Nvidia drivers. Even for much older
hardware. The other reason I have to use Nvidia is CUDA.

Yikes tell me how we resolve this! On the one hand there is a small
group of IDL users who for several years now want IDL to "seamlessly"
support GPU accelerated graphics. And IDL is also expected to support
"an old ATI card, which no longer has drivers that work on a recent
OS". At least IDL has a software rendering option!

I hear your pain regarding the directory name and path changes. Part
of the change was to correct what was admittedly a bad decision in IDL
8.1, as Mike Galloy points out in his review of IDL 8.2 posted on this
newsgroup:

> For example, on my Mac IDL 8.2 installs into
> /Applications/exelis/idl82
> instead of the more complicated path in IDL 8.1
> /Applications/itt/idl/idl81
> I suppose this is mostly unavoidable and for the better, but my CMake scripts to find IDL installations just added another level of complexity.

Unfortunately the directory structure has other complications, much
like most things in life today. We cannot just name the top level
folder “idl” because that is confusing to those customers who only use
ENVI, which is distributed on IDL. And naming the top level folder
“foo” or “software” is not appropriate for us as a software vendor
either. If you have a great suggestion, I am all ears. I could
probably talk about this for an hour or more…
