The function N_ELEMENTS will tell you. If the result is zero then the variable doesn't exist:

N_ELEMENTS(x)

I put this command on the IDL command N_ELEMENTS (X), but I recieved
this error experation.
"% Attempt to call undefined procedure/function: 'N_ELEMENTS'.
% Error occurred at: $MAIN$
% Execution halted at: $MAIN$ "
