Hi Stefan,

The first thing I see, will be the lost of X11 : http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/17/apple-removes-x11-in-os- x-mountain-lion-shifts-support-to-open-source-xquartz/

I don't know if IDL if compatible with xQuartz (the Open source 'X11')

I'm sure exelis-vis will answer your question saying that "the only supported version of IDL is Mac Os Leopard" :'(
Maybe one day they will consider that more and more scientists work under Mac
