After installing IDL 6.0 on a Windows 7 operating machine and putting
in the permanent licence, when running it get:
"
IDL Version 6.0, Microsoft Windows (Win32 x86 m32). (c) 2003, Research
Systems, Inc.
% LICENSE MANAGER: Terminal Server remote client not allowed
Feature: idl
License path: C:\RSI\\license\license.dat;C:\RSI\\license\*.lic
FLEXlm error: -103,577. System Error: 2 ""
For further information, refer to the FLEXlm End User Manual,
available at "www.globetrotter.com"..
License file: C:\RSI\\license\license.dat:C:\RSI\\license\*.lic
"
after which it reverts to the 7 minutes of demo, where i can
successfully run programs, but only for this limited period of time.
The licence i have is one personal one and works for any XP machine.
I'm quite happy with IDL 6.0 and cant really afford the outlay for the
latest version of IDL.
Any suggestions about how i get IDL 6.0 working on Windows 7?
thank you,
Neil

I feel your pain, but sympathize with ITTVIS's support
position. If I were going to write software that would
be run on computers 15 years from now (phones,
more likely!) I wouldn't want to be held accountable
either. :-)
If it truly runs as perfectly as you say it does, it would
be a minor miracle, at least!
Cheers,
David

Am I the only one who thinks that whenever the bug source is not in
a .pro file, it seems to go ignored by ITTVIS, with the bonus of new
and complementary related bugs at every new IDL or OS release?
I mentioned some at
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/browse_t hread/thread/3828b3d0408162e4
and links in it, with no answer yet. The multiple bugs on object
graphics rendering seem to only multiply. For the bug with the license
manager I mentioned above (for a new OS, Fedora 15) I had to find a
solution myself (change back the names of the ethernet devices).

Neil,
The XP mode for Windows 7 is a full XP VM so that you are now having
trouble under XP and not under Windows 7. This hsould qualify you for
tech support again as IDL 6 was designed to run under Windows XP.
To double-check that the XP mode is not somehow quirky, you could
install Virtualbox/Virtual PC/VMware and try installing XP from the
original CD.

All,
the solution to this problem was to have dual boot (Windows 7 & XP) on the laptop. I then installed IDL 6.0 on the XP partition and it seems to be working fine. It's a bit fiddly doing this, but eventually it worked.
IDL 6.0 operating in XP-mode under Win 7 (or directly on Win 7) could not work under the combined licensing arrangement of Win 7 and FlemLM, as in both cases the machine thinks IDL 6.0 is working on a remote machine, although it is actually all taking place on a single laptop.
Cheers,
Neil
