I've not used CYGWIN, but I assume the notes below apply to any Unix system.

If you just want to compress or decompress a file then call bzip2 with the SPAWN command.

If you want to directly read a .bz2 file, then use the UNIT keyword when calling bzip2 with SPAWN to open a pipe. (My FITS readers will do this when encountering a file with a .bz2 extension.) --Wayne
