OK, this appears to be due to the LIMIT not being
applied properly to the map projection when I set
the map projection up. If I reapply the LIMIT after
I have set the map projection up, it appears to
work properly:

mp = Map(...)
mp.LIMIT = limit

I think the bottom line is that the LIMIT keyword to
a map projection just plain doesn't work at all.
