Folks,

I wish to apologize. I have been far too acerbic on this newsgroup
for far too long (well, since IDL 8.0 came out), and to get the
programming gods off my back I am promising to be nicer from
now on.

As if I didn't have enough computer problems this morning,
I now learn that my IDL 7.1.2 distribution on my laptop
is no longer working. I get this error when I start it up:

% GMEM_UNMAP: Error loading sharable executable.
Symbol: IDL_Load, File = C:\Program Files\ITT\IDL71\bin\bin.x86
\idl_gmem.dll
%1 is not a valid Win32 application.

Thinking something had gotten corrupted, I completely
removed IDL 7 from my computer and reinstalled it just
now. I have the SAME problem with the completely fresh
install.

Any ideas on how I might get back on the positive
side of the karmic consciousness?

Cheers,

David

Success at last! I really don't know what the problem was,
but, I went into the .idl directory (in Users/david) and
deleted anything that had an "IDL 7" in its name. Restared
IDL 7.1.2 and all is well now.

Now, just two hours to get my preferences back together
and I am good to go!

Cheers,

David

All good suggestions, but recall that IDL 7.1.2 had
been on my computer for a LONG time. And, it was
existing comfortably with IDL 8.2 as recently as
a week ago, when I taught a class, switching back
and forth from one to the other.

It was only after I installed the IDL 8.2.1 update
and played with that for a couple of days that I found
I couldn't return to IDL 7. I don't see how IDL 8.2.1
could be involved. IDL 7 is installed in an ITT folder,
while IDL 8.2.1 is installed in an Exelis folder. Plus,
they use Workspace folders that are in different locations.
Their only connection was adding the same permanent
directories (coyote and catalyst) as projects.

I suspect a Windows update now. I thought I had installed
all the updates on my newly-configured office computer,
but I have basically been doing updates all day long.
(Apparently Windows updates have to be done in sequence.)
If I eventually get to the point that IDL 7.1.2 no longer
works on my office computer, we might be getting somewhere!

Virus scanners could be a place to look. While I have
been reinstalling software, I've been updating as I go.
I do have an older version of AVG on my laptop. I'll have
a look at this.

Cheers,

David
