We have a system in which files migrate from disk to tape after some period of non-use. It used to be that if an IDL script attempted to open an HDF file that has migrated to tape, IDL would wait until the file has been moved back to disk. Now, for some reason, the script does not wait, it crashes. This happens in all environments that I checked: IDL 6.4 & 7.1, RHEL4 & RHEL5. (There's no explicit file existence check or "wait" in our scripts.)

Commands such as "od" wait for the file to become available.

Any ideas? Has IDL's file-opening mechanism changed?
