IDL 8.2.3 is now available for download from our website, www.exelisvis.com (note that you'll need to login through the "My Account" link to access the download). I have a short write-up of what's new on the IDL blog:

Dear Mark,

It may be just me, but the exelisvis login page seems to be broken. No download for me!

Sniff,

David

Just installed. Bubbleplot is fun to play with. But I don't really need it for now. The sad part is that lots of my video output code is broken. Especially those google ".webm" format. I suppose you should not expect these silent changes in the what's new section. I guess I will have to roll back to 8.2.2 for some time.

cheers,
bp

OK, found a fix to this codec mess. Just follow the instruction of "Replacing the FFmpeg Version" in the document. The instruction is a bit outdated in terms of version numbers. You need to download ffmpeg-1.2-win64-shared.7z from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com. Back up the original dlls (avcodec-54.dll
avformat-54.dll avutil-52.dll swscale-2.dll), replace them with the ones from the downloaded ffmpeg-1.2. Boom, we are good now. And enjoy the bubbleplot!

Cheers,
bp

SVN not working properly for me.

"Check-Out as" works. Some standard features like "update" seems to work
too.

But "team->synchronize with repository" fails with following error:

Some of selected resources were not synchronized.

:-(

Ah, new website... Maybe this direct link:

http://www.exelisvis.com/MyAccount/Downloads.aspx

will work? You still have to login, but you get directly to the Downloads page. Once there, you may have to select the "All Downloads" tab.

If this doesn't work, please let me know and I'll find a web person to help.

No go. It just drops me right back into a login screen. No errors. No download either.
This is true for both Chrome and Firefox.

All I get when I try to login is "You are not currently authorized to
login to this site.", regardless of the password I use. It seems that
every time I try to download IDL there is a problem like this.

Thank's for your rapid answer, that's fine. I am not _that_ eager to
switch to 8.2.3 (to be sure, I always keep the older versions of IDL
ready).
Have you guys at exelisvis thought about beta testing on some selected
(unix/mac) users before realease? Or is it only for bigger version changes?

Hi Mark,

Has the data structure problem been fixed with this release? Here's the reference: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.idl-pvwave /2S95i-IfpY8

Thank you for your time!

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately I have two issues with this release:

The first is the already mentioned SVN Sync issue.

The second is to do with the new FILE_GZIP routine. The compresses the file fine however, it:
1. Removes the suffix on compressed files name
2. Renames the compressed file to match the fileout name

For example:

FILE_GZIP, test_original_name.txt, test_new_name.gz

results in as compressed file like this:

test_new_name.gz
|
-------------> test_new_name

I would like it to do this however:

test_new_name.gz
|
-------------> test_original_name.txt

The compressed filename seems dependent on the filename of the archive if I rename it the name of the internal file reflects this change.
Not keeping the original filename I can live with but loosing the suffix unless I call the file test_new_name.txt.gz I cant.

Thanks,
Tim

On a more positive note. I'm finally able to use .reset without the whole workspace crashing the next time I ran my application. I assume this was fixed along with the Eclipse update.

Scratch that it now just starts up my app, but crashed the whole workspace randomly after using it for a bit.

I've switched to using file_zip rather than file_gzip this does everthing I need.

This is really strange. It looks like a bug, but the more I fool with it
the more it looks like a completely non-intuitive design feature! It is
strange we haven't heard from ExelisVis about this. But, I have written
a short article that describes what you have to do to preserve the file
extension of the compressed file here:

http://www.idlcoyote.com/fileio_tips/extgone.php

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

I looked into this a bit further taking a look at the gzip command options in Linux and it would seem that IDL is doing the compression in a similar way as having set the -n option.

-n --no-name
When compressing, do not save the original file name and time stamp by default. (The original name is always saved if the name had to be truncated.) When decompressing, do not restore the original file name if present (remove only the gzip suffix from the compressed file name) and do not restore the original time stamp if present (copy it from the compressed file). This option is the default when decompressing.

However it seems to me that it would be good to have an option to save the original name. In fact you would think that would be the default to save the original to be consistent with how the file_zip routine works and have the option to not save the original name.

Well, I have been discussing it with the fine folks at ExelisVis most of
the day. I final have them to the point they are almost ready to concede
the interface *may* be a touch non-intuitive. :-)

And, I agree, it should work like File_Zip.

Cheers,

David

They must be busy with other things, like the SVN bug I mentioned
earlier ;-)

If I recap what I read on the newsgroup there are three issues with IDL
8.2.3:
- FILE_GZIP does not behave like expected and like it's brother FILE_ZIP
- SVN plugin not working properly
- plot(/OVERPLOT) introduces a new behaviour (which is not to expect
from a "bugfix" release)

It is clearly impossible to avoid bug-free releases. The same occurs for
open-source projects. However, the time needed to correct these and
providing either a patch or a quick bugfix release should be as short as
possible. But let's wait and see!

Cheers

I am informed this morning by people who use gzip a lot that this
behavior I am complaining about is considered completely normal by
people in that community. It is the way gzip works.

So, there you go. Apparently IDL's implementation of this functionality
is completely consistent with what people who work with gzip expect. I
guess it's pretty clear I am not a member of that community. :-)

David

There you go! One bug fixed. Maybe the /OVERPLOT behavior is also
something that was expected, so there's just one bug left ;-)

Hi Tim,

Though odd, this is expected behavior for GZIP. Chris, his team and I actually discussed this when they were creating FILE_GZIP/FILE_GUNZIP.

Note that the default one-parameter call to these routines preserves the original extension; e.g.,

IDL> file_gzip, 'foo.txt'
IDL> $ls
foo.txt foo.txt.gz

with complimentary behavior for FILE_GUNZIP.

Just to chime in, Mark's explanation is correct. By default, you shouldn't need to use the second argument. It's just like on Unix, when you do "gzip file", you don't normally supply the output filename. The second argument is really only there if you need to write the file to a different directory, or if you *insist* on giving the gzip file a new name (which will then carry over to the uncompressed file name).

But just to be safe, I'll add a note to the documentation explaining this behavior.

Cheers,
Chris
