Ah, yes, the ol' "Please update your video driver"
problem. We should have thought of this. Sorry!

It will help in the future if people mention up
front what exactly they are doing when they have
a problem. It's always better to have clues, as
Sherlock Holmes would say. :-)

Cheers,

David

The problem is finally solved, thanks to our Help-desk. I had to change "Rendering method for object graphics" from Hardware to Software (you can find it in Window -> Preferences -> IDL -> Graphics).
Nevertheless, thanks for trying to help!

Cheers,
AS

Hmm. I don't use iImage to dispay images, so I don't know what could
be wrong with it. How about using simple display routines like tvscl?
My 7.0 on a Mac seems stable.

When I try to open a single image file I'm getting an error: "Fatal error: IDL has encountered a fatal error and will now exit.". I have no idea what to do. Please be tolerant because I'm new to Linux and IDL so it's quite challenging for me.

It could be something broken in your linux :-( ... but I would first
see if I can read any other file format and then if that works maybe
use a free image file format changing tool as a work-around until a
newer version of IDL/linux could be found?

Hope this helps.

That reminds me of the situation when, say, an airplane
breaks down and the problem is "solved" by putting everyone
on a bus: that works, but it will take you a long time to
get there...
