I'm investigating different database options to improve the somewhat messy and inconsistent approach to data management that I'm currently faced with. I've been playing around with mySQL, accessing it within IDL using the Java Bridge. It works okay, but the whole schtick of the mySQL tables and indexing doesn't seem a great fit to the kind of data and the use of the data that I have (Earth science/Astronomy operational agency).

I've stumbled across SciDB http://www.scidb.org/ and am intrigued, especially since it seems to have been developed due to the very same square peg - round hole issues I'm facing with mySQL for the kind of data I'm working with. I did find a reference somewhere (dated around 2011 I think) that one of the goals of the project was to provide interfaces to this from the tools that are commonly used in this area, such as MATLAB and IDL. On the other hand, I can't find the current existence of such tools.

Has anyone used SciDB from within IDL? Failing that, has anyone used it at all and if so whether it seemed like a good system for this kind of data?

Not IDL. Nor MatLab.

The focus at the moment for client development is on 'R' and Python.
