Depends on what you are doing. My home system has 32MB, and that is
fine for most of my home-projects (astronomical image processing).
Depending on what additional programs you run parallel to IDL (editors
etc), approx. all memory above ~14MB will be for your IDL session.
I rarely have sessions above 40MB of RAM at work.
I've even done scientific work (image processing, time series analysis)
on a 12MB notebook. OK, that was no fun, as it was heavily swapping,
but no real problems.
In short, 64MB should be OK for most applications.
