I think it's important to point out that until Version 5.0, IDL
did not support the linking in of external code written in, say,
C or Fortran, using CALL_EXTERNAL() or LINKIMAGE().

We have a dozen or so Linux boxes running IDL (4.0). The only complaint
is that we (read I) have to constantly redo the license, since they are
using the old genver scheme with a temporary license which expires every
180 days. That may not seem bad for you, but it can be a pain. Version 5
is supposed to fix this problem and allow real licenses, including floating
licenses, which will be a great thing from management standpoint.

There are some small things not supported under Linux, but that really
hasn't been a problem. The our main programmers do much of their IDL
programming on Linux running on laptops. This is MUCH better than trying
to do the conversion to MS Windows.

We haven't had any support problems. When I do call about things (like it's
time to renew some licenses) they are quick to respond.
