In the Jan 1997 !News, David Stern is quoted:

...IDL 5.0 must be backward-compatible with earlier IDL programs.
We are taking extra steps during development to ensure
compatibility with IDL 4.0.1 applications.

Unfortunately, our initial testing shows some things that are not
compatible. The most glaring is a graphics application in which the map
comes out upside down in IDL 5.

Sure. I've been trying to keep track of my complaints/compliments, my
notes so far can be found in

http://zippy.physics.uwo.ca/idl/notes/idl50_preview.html

Please note that many of the comments are Windows95 specific,
although there are notes which will be of general interest. Also,
this are just my initial reactions, not a detailed test of every feature.

yeah, it does not look much different in terms of capabilities from v.4.
At least (most for me) the long file names is available on windows95
