I asked at this group what this message means, because I thought
it was specific to IDL. However it is a generic OSF / Dec Unix
message. In my case it was a transient problem. Its formal definition
follows: I found it with 5 minutes of Altavista search..
[ENOTTY] Not a typewriter
Indicates one or more of the following errors:
o The file descriptor's file is not a terminal.
o The calling process does not have a controlling
terminal.
o The controlling terminal is no longer associated
with the calling process session (tcsetpgrp()).
o The specified open descriptor is not associated
with a character-special device or the specified
request does not apply to the kind of object that
the specified open descriptor references (ioctl()).
