This is amazing...I've seen this problem before! But, alas, whatever it
is it's not an IDL problem. I'd see it happen ("Bleah is not a
typewriter) during execution of my startup scripts .login and .cshrc. I
don't know what it is that sets it off, but it's not unique to IDL.

BTW it was on a DEC Alpha running 3.0.
