Yes, I've done it.
In short: If Linux runs, IDL will, too. Mine is more a minimal
configuration: 486DX/2-66, 12MB Ram and 340MB disk.

You may want to have a look at the Linux Laptop Page:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
to learn more about "good" Linux Notebooks.

For supported PCMCIA-Cards (Ethernet etc) look at
ftp://hyper.stanford.edu/pub/pcmcia

In any case it is a good idea to have *a lot* of RAM, and maybe
onboard-SCSI if you intend to use tapes and/or external data disks.
