IDL Mac users - whats the difference between launching from the dock icon and launching from an x-window? [message #87736]

This query is directed to those who know about using IDL on a Mac. I'm running IDL8.2.3 on a MacbookPro under OSX10.8.5. I'm finding IDL behaves somewhat differently (details don't really matter) when I launch IDL by clicking on the icon in the doc (which opens the Workbench) and when I use an X-window and enter either the command "idl" or the command "idlde." I would have thought that the icon was just a pointer to the same "idlde" command (/Applications/exelis/idl/bin/) but that appears not to be the case. Rather, it points to the "IDL82.app" in /Applications/exelis/. Is there a way to configure the .app to behave identically to the one launched from the shell? Thanks.

I've changed the icon in my doc to point at "idlde.darwin.x86_64.app" in /Applications/exelis/idl82/idlde folder.

(But, I almost always start IDL from the terminal with the outofprocess flag.)

Thanks, Phillip. I ended up editing the init file so that it sources my .bashrc. That works as well.

P.S. Still working on the IDL/ImageMagick mystery.
