Having READ ingest the input without waiting for return key to be hit? [message #88625]

I'm trying to have:

letter=''
READ, PROMPT="Enter a letter", letter

finish waiting for input after the first letter is entered without having to have the user hit return. I tried searching around for solutions but my google-fu/index-reading skills were not up to the task. Thanks for any ideas!
