It is unfortunate that IDL is not (maybe they are ???) working
on expanding this capability to more affordable and user
developing option.

Mathworks (MATLAB) offer you their MATLAB C-library and
C-compiler for reasonable cost and let you build an exexutable
yourself. It is still limitted, but, I believe, it is a step in the right
direction. I wish RSI were more aggresive in their competition
and incorporated more of the obviously good ideas.

It is an IDL executable.

> Did it mean an executable IDL script?

No, this is a real executable, just like what you and everyone
else wants to build.

> What will it cost?

More than you want to pay. :-)

RSI must do the embedding of IDL into your application.
I hear this is "ridiculously expensive" to quote someone
who wrote me about it just today. The general feeling is
that if your are not also selling high-priced medical
equipment or some other item in which you can bury the
couple of hundred dollars cost, you will not be interested
in this option.

(I'm making the numbers up, although I think I am not
far off based on several recent conversations with
disgruntled small-scale software developers. Check
with your local IDL sales rep for the actual costs.)

Cheers,

David
