My office isn't caught in a timewarp - the powers that be simply take upgrades slowly. It may be a long time before I will be allowed to convert from direct graphics, even for new development. We have been on IDL 8.0 for about three years (after many years of coding to version 6.1) and running XLoadct shows 41 named color tables. The on line documentation for the default color tables show 75 named color tables (0-74). Are the other color tables newer than 8.0?

I use v8.4 and there is indeed 75 color tables.

I believe the other color tables were implemented in IDL 8.2.2 (or thereabouts). I've used Coyote Graphics to use the Brewer color tables when writing code that needs to maintain backwards compatibility to pre-8.2.

What's New in IDL 8.2.1

Color Tables

Custom color tables can now be created using the COLORTABLE function.
Additional color tables based on ColorBrewer schemes are available.
