Why does IDL's fix function think -32768 is a long integer?

IDL> print,ishft(-32768,-1)
2147467264
IDL> print,ishft(fix(-32768),-1)
16384

The second result is what I expected from the first call to ishft. Do I
not understand something properly?

George
