We are considering implementing a system to better display, both on
screen and hard copy, a vast amount of meteorological and oceanographic
data collected over many years and stored in a variety, almost
whimsical, binary formats. The data has been collected from a variety of
instruments, Datawell directional waveriders, Seatex waveriders and various
current meters and met stations. PV-WAVE, and especially since its marriage
with IMSL, seems a good choice in my limited opinion but what concerns me
is the amount of effort that will be needed before it (PV-WAVE) can
access our databases. My first queries:-

Can PV-WAVE work with any database format, i.e. can I describe
the format of one of our databases to PV-WAVE?
Does PV-WAVE have its own database and if so can it import from
standard (sic) database formats like Dbase4, Paradox, even, say a
Lotus 1-2-3 wk1 or wk3 file?
If PV-WAVE does have its own database style, does it supply a
library of calls that I can use in any future software I develop?

A second query:-

I am setting up a system based around a SUN sparcserver 10
( model 52) running Solaris 2.1 with perhaps as many as
5 X-terminals. Does this sound reasonable considering running
PV-WAVE will be its only function?
I'd welcome any comments even approaches from PV-WAVE personnel to better
enlighten me.
Thanks in anticipation
