Harris seems to be deemphasizing IDL [message #94401]

I just watched the video that Harris emailed to their customers to introduce
their new website. It doesn't mention IDL even once.
Instead it calls out "ENVI, Jagwire, Geiger-mode LiDAR ... and more."

This lack of emphasis is consistent with IDL's placement on the
updated web site. It's nowhere near the front page.

Compare that to the MathWorks website that trumpets the many benefits
of matlab and Simulink on the front page. This might not seem to be
a fair comparison because matlab is MathWorks' main product, whereas
IDL appears to play a smaller role for Harris.

Regardless of the explanation, it would be good for the continued
viability of IDL as a programming platform if Harris could find a way
to make it seem more ... important.

I work for Harris. I think they pretty much swallowed up exelis whole and are completely unaware that IDL exists. All they wanted was Envi to complement their surveillance business, I doubt if there are a dozen people in Harris who can problem 'hello world' in IDL.

The best thing would be for the IDL parts of exelis to be spun off into their own business. Eventually someone at Harris is going to say, "What is this IDL crap, never heard of it. Doesn't make any money. Shut it down".

I mean, the work Harris does has absolutely no relation to the work that 99% of IDL users do. It's no wonder it's being ignored.
