Hello,

I've been trying to get a pure white background with IDLgrVolume
to no avail.

Can someone try obj_vol.pro that comes with IDL 5 and let
me know if the background is white? You'll have to change
a line:

myview = OBJ_NEW('IDLgrView', VIEWPLANE_RECT=[-1, -1, 2, 2], $
ZCLIP=[2.0, -2.0], COLOR=[255,255,255])

(on my system the path is: /usr/local/rsi/idl_5/examples/object)
