Mac Aliases / Text Widget Carriage Returns [message #9877] Wed, 27 August 1997 00:00

I am fairly new to IDL programming and could use some
advice on 2 recent problems:

1) I'd like to make a Macintosh alias (icon) that would
call IDL and automatically run my program. I'd prefer
not to use the "use startup file" under "preferences"
since this ties up IDL. On Windows, this is easy since
the a 2nd icon can be set up to run IDL with a command line
arguement while leaving the original icon free to run a
general IDL session. Is there something equivalent on
the Mac or a work-around? Can AppleScript do this?

2) When using word wrap with a text widget, I have not
been able to insert blank lines with a carriage return.
Is there a newline character that can be used in text
strings? The text widget seems to want 1 continuous,
unbroken string. This also makes the program listing
unwieldy because there does not seem to be the equivalent
of "$" for use inside of a string. My kludge was to call
the text from a file and use hyphens instead of blank lines
to separate paragraphs in the text widget. Would like
to do it better.

Thanks,
Doug Corbin
