I use similar configuration and had the same problem when I updated
to emacs-19.34. I think the problem was with emacs-19.28 the hilit
package and the font-lock package of Emacs were one as good as the
other, but since the 19.30s font-lock has become the officially
supported package.
First thing is, you might want to start off with the newest idl.el
and idl-shell.el versions. Patches for both were posted in July 1997
to comply with IDL 5.0. We supply both versions on our Web site:
http://www.mpae.gwdg.de/mpae_RZ/software/idl/
There you should also follow the 'Customization' link (and that has
another 'Customization hints' link) to learn how to get Font-lock
working properly.
I don't know what might be wrong with your line indentation. It
works fine here, so if the problems still remain, I'll be glad
to send you a copy of my .emacs for inspection.
