For full documentation on TIFF file format have a look at the following http.
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/~mxr/gfx/2d/TIFF-5.txt
Also if you look at the read_tiff program. (or tiff_read), in the IDL source
library you'll find this a good start as most of the taggs are explained.
