I find it helpful (both in IDL and FORTRAN) to think of 2D *arrays* as
having dimensions defined as (NX,NY), where
NX is number of elements in the X direction,
NY is number of elements in the Y direction.

I find this convention to be much easier to understand than
(column,row).

*Matrices* are a different matter of course.....
