You might want to check out the DICOM reader from Floating Point
Systems (I hope I got that name right):
http://www.floating.co.uk/idl/dicom.html
I haven't used this myself but according to the folks at Floating
Point Systems it has some features not available in IDL 5.2's
implementation.
And just in case you care, there is a standalone program called
3D-Doctor that can read DICOM medical images:
3D-Doctor : Read raw/DICOM medical images, convert, segment,
render! http://www.ablesw.com/3d-doctor (Pentium+, Win95,
32MB+)
