This is a hard problem in computer-vision sciences. This is perhaps
the reason why nobody can give you an satisfying answer.
If you have an unstructured backround you can use threshold-operations
on the (maybe filtered) image. If you have structured background you
have to use additional information (e.g. texture-based features,
motion, colour-features,... ).
