I wonder if you are running into memory problems with the printer.
We had such problems and decided to abandon the use of images, and
instead we contour 2-D datasets with c_color and /fill turned on.
The resulting file is usually smaller than the image, and depending
upon the chosen contour interval, it may not look very different.
