You are correct that the basic docs (IDL Reference Guide and IDL User's
Guide) do not mention HDF. What you need is the separate booklet "IDL
Scientific Data Formats" which comes with IDL 3.1. It describes routines
for handling CDF, NetCDF, and HDF files.
