CALL_EXTERNAL on Debian Linux [message #15422]

Hi,

has anyone had success with CALL_EXTERNAL or DLM's on Debian Linux?
I'm using IDL 5.1 because of problems with 5.2 on my system. When
I try IDL's example in /usr/local/rsi/idl/external/sharelib, I get
an error:

% CALL_EXTERNAL: Error loading sharable executable.
Symbol: simple, File = /home/fardal/comp/idl/external/simple
.so
File not found
% Execution halted at: C_ONLY 161 c_only.pro
% $MAIN$
IDL> $pwd
/home/fardal/comp/idl/external
IDL> $ls simple.so
simple.so

So the file exists, but can't be found. Perhaps it just had problems
loading, IDL's error messages are often inaccurate. The same thing
happens when I try to use Stein's DLMFORM script. Any ideas?
