Hi Mohit and Welcome to the World of IDL!

To be short, IDL can do EVERYTHING!... Well maybe it can't walk yet but only due
to the lack of appropriate hardware. Computing the steps wold not be a problem
:-)
It is worth learning, it will pay off. The task you describe is (easily)
achievable - take a look at the thunderstorm demo RSI supplies.
