That a nice, simple idea.
The trouble might be,
a) if
IDL> y=<some_complicated_and time_consuming_expression> & plot,x
then y would be evaluated twice. And, worse,
b) if y was created before the beginning of time, and
IDL> plot,y & y=y+1 & oplot,y
then the hard copy would be different from the screen plot.
