I'm running the exact same set up, have IDL running
virtually all day long, and I can't remember the last
time my machine crashed. It was a long, LONG time ago.

Windows can be very strange though. I had some odd behavior
(I couldn't write a PostScript file to disk) that didn't
go away until I finally reinstalled all of Windows NT,
with the latest service pack. It still puts the odd
application icon on the Shut Down button, which I
assume is NOT a feature. :-(
