Wow, this thread is really covering a wide swath of
topics! As long as we're on the topic of editors,
I'll put in a plug for Visual SlickEdit

By far the most customizable, extensible and all
around flexible development environment
I've found for writing code (PV-WAVE, java, C,
C++, Fortran, perl, SQL, you name it, SlickEdit
has a mode for it). Has a fully implemented
emacs mode, as well as vi. Best yet, it runs
not only on Windows, but a broad spectrum of UNIX flavors
as well. Displays a sidebar navigation tool with
links to all procedures (PRO), functions (FUNCTION),
etc. that are in your source code. One click and you're
there.

I couldn't get by without it.
