Can you give us an example of what exactly you are doing? I did not
encounter this behaviour before, strings have always worked fine for me.

IDL> help, string( bytarr( 20000 ) + 65b )
<Expression> STRING =
'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA'...
