Yes. I thought I was going crazy recently, because I don't
remember IDL ever complaining about not being able to
find a function until run-time. But clearly it is
looking for this functions during compile time.

As you suggest, this makes it awfully hard to
write version-independent code. Perhaps it is
done as an impetus to upgrade to the latest version
of IDL. :-)
