For the extraction of subportions of an array you could try out my
arrex routine which you can find at
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/~schultz.martin/idl/html/libmartin_ schultz.html
. It's fairly general, but I am not sure if it is the fastest for
extracting similar array portions over and over again.
