You don't mention if other IDL X-windows functions besides widgets work or not?
Can you bring up a plot window? If not, try

IDL> PRINT,!D.NAME

and see what it says. If it isn't "X", then say

IDL> SET_PLOT,'X'

and see if that solves your problem. (If it does, then you'll need to
investigate why it doesn't use X-windows automatically.)
