You could do one of these:

* set the variables in your IDL startup file. This file is a script
that runs in each IDL session. See the manual.
* "SAVE, /SYSTEM" might do the trick but the hitch is that it saves
*all* the system variables.

Dominik, you have a lot of questions. Maybe you could pause for a
