Scientific Notation for tickmark labels [message #258]

Is there a way in either default IDL or some user-written routine
to get scientific notation on the displayed tickmark labels?

This is for version 2.2.2 of IDL, running both on a VAX (VMS 5.4-1)
and SPARCs (SunOS 4.1.1).
