I'm not trying to be snide. I was just pointing out that this topic
is, in fact, covered in the VTK book:

8.3 Coordinate Transformation
Dataset to Global Coordinates
Global to Dataset Coordinates

The geophysical folks certainly have more coordinate transformation
issues than many other groups. I don't know if the VTK coordinate
transformation classes are good enough for what you need to do.
