Thanks for the response. Yes, the work around does not
work around for me either, so I guess I will follow
your advice and switch my X to 16 bit colors.

PS I have VNC (virtual network computing) running, so I
can have a little independent 16 bit virtual desktop to test out IDL
before I actually make any changes. COOL!
