YES!! I agree. I discussed this with some of the tech support and
other RSI contacts. The basic response that I received was that if
enough people request it, then they will extend to that platform. At
the time (a few months back) a couple of people that I talked with
mentioned that they had a few requests.

Regarding the stability of Linux: We have had an installation running
continuously for around 65 days (as of today, and it keeps ticking :-)

From my experience of porting software to Linux I can't imagine too
much difficulty in the process (and I do physics by trade :-). The only
real question that RSI should have in front of them at the moment re:
IDL and Linux is the cost of support for an additional version.

Personally I would prefer a Pentium 90 running Linux over a Sparc 5
any day- but only if I had IDL for Linux installed on it.

Regards,

-Steve

: Yes!
: Since starting to work with Linux, that was something I had in my mind.
: Meanwhile Linux is definitely stable enough, and other companies are
: starting to port their software (e.g. Maple V). Maybe that will persuade
: RSI to do the port?

: I only see one major Problem: IDL's pricings are quite high, and a lot of
: the Linux users prefer cheap or free software. (Maple has a special-priced
: offer for a limited time. Would be a good idea for IDL, too). On the other
: hand, a lot of intitutes are starting to switch to Pentium-based Linux
: workstations, so I would assume a big upcomming market from that side.

: And, at last, I would be willing to buy an Linux-IDL, as I do nearly
: everything with it here at work.

: Peter
